In France, Alfred de Musset indulges in a similar nostalgia: ‘O Greece! … / / I am a citizen of your ancient ages; / My soul with the bee strays beneath your porticos’ (1831). But Giacomo Leopardi in Italy finds almost no consolation for the loss of the gods in his poem ‘To Spring, or, Concerning the Ancient Fables’ (1824). He mourns the loss of ‘that fair former age’ when gods danced on the mountain tops and the shepherd heard Pan’s pipes along the river bank. Now we have no kinship with them, Olympus is empty, and the thunder, no longer sent by Zeus, wanders aimlessly and frightens innocent and guilty alike. At the end, Leopardi turns to nature with a forlorn plea to listen to our troubles ‘if you still live’, or if even one being somewhere in nature at least takes note of our sorrows, even if it will not pity us.
